The Why
Many of the societal and cultural changes that I’ve seen in my lifetime came about through grassroots efforts. In my lifetime I witnessed the first voting opportunity for my parents, I saw students bussed to integrated schools, I’ve witnessed the elevated status of women in the workplace, and the legalization of same sex marriage. That is just to name a few. If I go back a few generations there are the examples of the women of the early 1900’s who were influential in such advances as the suffrage movement, the start up of legacy institutions and organizations (Colleges, Universities, NAACP, hospitals, corporations, etc). There seems to be a few common threads woven through these powerful stories; grassroots is about wholeheartedness, unity, and sweat equity. That is the profile of those who enlist in the Army of Do-Gooders.
Community Service Projects
The How
There are many grassroots community based organizations and non-profits working towards the same goal of enriching the human experience through service. Our contribution will be to band together annually to conduct one project. So how will we determine how to allocate our resources, gifts and talents? Here’s the Project Selection Guidelines:
- A project must be able to be completed in less than 3 full days. (Ideal project is one to two days. Or a weekend).
- A project must be fully funded by the Do-Gooders. In other words, there’s no outside resources required to complete the project (no fundraising efforts involved).
- A project must have clearly defined deliverables. What will the recipients come away with? This should be clearly documented in a Project Request form.
- The project should be approved by the Do-Gooders with a majority vote.
